Our trip to Aberdeen, Scotland in May 2012

Alli and I spent nearly a week in Aberdeen, Scotland from Saturday May 26 to Friday June 1 2012.

During our trip to Scotland, we stayed at 48 Skene Terrace. It was a small flat, but it suited us well. Unfortunately, our flight from Newark to Heathrow was delayed, so we missed our Heathrow to Aberdeen flight. Maggie, the manager of the flat, had scheduled to meet us and give us the keys at 13:00. I had to call her from Heathrow and let her know of the delay. She ended up having to wait about 3 hours for us to arrive. She was cordial and understanding.

Here is a view from outside of the flat, looking west, basically, the same view here via Google Maps. Near the end of the street are communal trash cans, we when cleaning up, we would walk down the street to take out the trash. The recycling area was in the opposite direction. You cannot really tell from the photos, but Skene Terrace has a significant slope. On Sunday, we woke to find that someone had tipped one of the trash cans and crap was strewn about the street . and not cleared until Monday.
3
The time zone in Scotland is 5 hours ahead of New York. Since we were only saying for a week, we decided to stay on New York time, meaning we were out late partying! Unfortunately, the door had a lock that was very loud. I had to suck for the neighbors. This door was the entrance to the building, and then we had another door for the flat. The door to the flat was a pain because you had to turn the key while turning the doorknob, to get in or out, meaning it was a two-hand job. It has to be difficult when you have a load of groceries you do not want to drop.

This plaque is posted outside the building at 48 Skene Terrace. Sir David Gill was a Scottish astronomer who is known for measuring astronomical distances, for astrophotography, and for geodesy. He spent much of his career in South Africa.
5
This is all the cool information left in the foyer. It includes maps of the city, bus schedules, and the property manager's contact information.
6
We were a little disappointed with the fireplace - it was electric. When we read the details about the place, Alli got excited that we would have a fireplace and burn stuff (had we read closely, the info on the web site does state, "there is also a fireplace fitted with an electric fire"). Instead, we got a heater with a faux flame. On the bright side, it did heat the room spectacularly well.
7
His Majesty's Theatre was near the flat. We arrived in Aberdeen on Saturday afternoon and went exploring on Sunday. Alas, by the time we figured there were shows to see, we were too late. Nothing but a stage version of Legally Blonde was available.
8
I believe this is a view of buildings on Union Street.

View looking down Crimon Place, from the middle of a public parking area that was near our flat. Here is the view from Google Maps.

This is a shot of Soul Casino from Bon-Accord Street. One night Alli was not feeling well and I went out to play poker. They didn't have poker at this casino, but they did at Grosvenor G Casino. I played a £35 no-limit hold'em tourney. I busted out on A-7 vs A-J.

14
For weeks leading up to our trip, Alli would check out the Castle Gate Web Cam. This information poster details the history of Castle Gate.
15
Here is a shot of the Castle Gate, with my head poking around.

Here is another shot of Castle Gate, with The Salvation Army Citadel in the background. The citadel is on the site of the medieval Aberdeen Castle.

This is the home of the Aberdeen City Archives on the corner of Union and Broad Streets.

A look down Union Street from Castle Gate.

This is a view of the enterance to The Archibald Simpson. We didn't go in the pub, but it looked nice from the outside. The pub is named after one of the major architects of Aberdeen.
22
We went to The Illicit Still during our first night in Aberdeen. Alli had read about it on a couple websites and it was on our list of "things to do." We stumbled upon it by accident, so we decided to venture in.
23
The decor of The Illicit Still was nice. We first stopped off at the bar, and then made our way to a small booth.
24
Alli had a great hamburger with an onion ring topper. I ordered a little pizza that tasted so-so. Here is Alli happy with here burger decision.
25
On Sunday and Monday, Aberdeen had great, sunny weather. We noticed that nearly 100% of the Aberdeen population had sunburns. It turned overcast on Tuesday, when we decided to take a walk to the beach.
26
27
You can barely make them out, but there were a couple surfers. The surf was small, sloppy, and I assume cold, because of the full wetsuits and headgear worn.
28
The boardwalk was nearly empty. I guess everyone had their fun in the sun during the previous couple days.

The Codona's Amusment Park was a little eerie; none of the rides were on and it seemed vacant. I guess it had to be hopping on Friday and Saturday when it was much more pleasant to be outside. Of course, a part of me could help but think about Zombieland
